Three people were killed in a shooting Sunday at a mall in Greenwood, Indiana, that ended with an armed man shooting and killing the gunman, municipalities said.
Greenwood Police Chief Jim Eason said the shooting occurred around 6 p.m. ET when a man entered the mall’s food court with a rifle and several boxes of ammunition and began shooting, while two others were shot at the scene. hospitalized. Authorities have not stated a motive for the shooting or identified the shooter.
Chief Ethan said the injured was a 12-year-old girl with minor back injuries, while the other was in stable condition.
Mayor Mark Myers said Sunday night that there was no further threat to the public and the police department was in control of the scene. He asked the public to stay away from the area.
“I’ve been a police officer for most of my life,” he said in an interview. “However, it’s incredibly shocking, not just for me, but for our entire community.”
Hours after the shooting at the mall, four people were shot, including one, at a vigil at a park in Beech Grove, Indiana, about 9 miles north of Greenwood.
Speaking at a news conference Sunday about the Greenwood shooting, Sheriff Eason said the local emergency call center began receiving calls about the shooting around 6 p.m. The threat ended when a passerby with a gun stopped the shooter, he said. “It appears that a well-meaning, heavily armed Samaritan observed the shooting and shot and killed the shooter,” he said.
Mr. Eisen only identified the passerby as a 22-year-old man from Bartholomew County, which is about 35 miles south of the mall, and added that he legally carried a firearm. In a statement, Mr Miles praised the man’s actions.
“The people we call ‘The Good Samaritan’ were able to shoot the attackers and stop further bloodshed,” Mr Myers said. “I thank him for his swift action and heroism in this situation.”
Chief Eisen has said investigators and others will not deal with the mall’s crime scene until the state bomb squad determines whether a “suspicious” backpack left in the mall’s bathroom is dangerous. Later on Sunday, he said investigators found no explosive device and they had cleared the backpack.
Police said on Facebook that they were looking for witnesses to the shooting, which occurred about 15 miles south of Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department tweeted that it was helping local authorities.
At about 9:30 p.m. ET, a shooting occurred in Beach Grove, a city of about 15,000 people southeast of Indianapolis, according to reports. As of Monday morning, one person had died and three were in stable condition, authorities said.
Beach Grove Mayor Dennis Barkley said at a news conference Monday morning that the shooting took place at a vigil at Don Charles Park. Some Beech Grove emergency responders were in Greenwood at the time of the mall shooting, officials said.
“We’re a good city,” Mr Buckley said. “But sometimes evil finds us, so we have to regroup and move on.”
