SYDNEY (Reuters) – Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he conceded defeat in Saturday’s national election and said the opposition Labour party looked likely to form a government despite an incomplete vote count.

“I spoke to the leader of the Opposition and incoming Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tonight and I congratulate him on his election victory tonight,” Morrison said in a televised address in Sydney.

Morrison added that he would resign as Liberal leader.

The surrender ended eight years and nine months in power for Morrison’s Conservative Coalition. Morrison became prime minister in 2018 after several leadership changes.
