Nicolas Toledo, 78, was identified as one of the victims of the mass shooting in downtown Highland Park, Illinois, during a July 4 parade, an official in the Mexican state of Morelos confirmed to CNN. one.

Six of Toledo’s eight children live in the United States. One of them was wounded in the shooting and two other Toledo family members were injured, according to a statement from Mexican authorities.

Toledo enjoys painting, fishing and walking in the park with his family, his granddaughter Kimberly Wrangell told CNN affiliate WBBM.

Another grandson, Xochil Toledo, started a GoFundMe page, where she described Toledo as a “caring person” who was “creative, adventurous and funny.”

“My grandfather Nicola Toledo’s 8-year-old father and grandfather of many left us on the morning of July 4th,” Xochil Toledo wrote. “What is the assumption[d] For all of us, having a fun family day turned into a horrible nightmare. “

“We are broken and numb as a family,” she wrote, adding that her grandfather is now the family’s guardian angel and asked people to keep them in her prayers.

“I love you abuelito. Descansa en paz,” she wrote.

According to Mexican officials, Toledo’s family wants to repatriate him to Mexico.
