Is the Royal Caribbean Drink Package Worth It?

When you book a room at Royal Caribbean International Airport (RCL) – Get the Royal Caribbean Group report or Carnival Cruise Line (CCL) – Get Carnival Corporation Report On a cruise ship, you basically only pay for your cabin, dining in the main restaurant, buffet and a few other free options, as well as entertainment and access to most of the facilities on board. However, apart from water, milk, basic coffee and a few other options, you don’t get internet access, meals at extra or fine dining restaurants, and drinks.

Bottled water, sparkling water, specialty coffee, fresh juices, milkshakes, and of course adult beverages are available for an extra fee. You can buy it anytime, or you can buy a premium drink package. Cruise lines offer some of these, including:

Classic Soda Package: Serve sparkling water with a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine at any location, Refreshment Package: Sparkling water, bottled water, specialty coffee, freshly squeezed juices and milkshakes. Deluxe Beverage Package: This includes everything in all other beverage packages, but adds alcoholic beverages, including any mixed drinks, spirits, wine, beer, or any other beverage, up to $14 per glass.

The deluxe package also allows you to get a discount on bottled wine, and if you have one, you just pay the difference in price on any drink over $14. And, unlike Carnival’s all-you-can-drink package, which effectively limits you to 15 alcoholic beverages per day, the Royal Caribbean package actually lets passengers drink as many drinks as they want, as long as they’re not visibly intoxicated.

How does the Royal Caribbean Drink Package work?

Whether a drink package is “value for money” depends on two main factors – how much you plan to drink and the cost of the package on your cruise. This can vary widely from as low as $52 per day to possibly as high as $85 per day (and in rare cases even higher (plus an 18% prepaid tip).

Carnival sells its drink packages at fixed prices:

$59.95 per person per day plus 18% service charge (purchased before cruise) $64.95 per person per day plus 18% service charge (purchased on board).

Royal Caribbean also makes it harder for customers to decide on a drink package, as prices can change. Cruise lines often offer sales on pre-cruise purchases (often almost every vacation or so), sometimes selling for better than “normal” prices, but sometimes not.

Basically, prices vary by cruise ship and often change before your cruise departs. To get the best price, you have to monitor the cruise line’s website, if you purchased it and see a lower price, you can cancel your original order and buy again (but you’ll have to wait until your credit card is refunded) get your money back).

And, generally speaking, if anyone in the room chooses to get the Premium Package, all adults 21 and older sailing in the same cabin must get the Premium Package. However, you can call the cruise line and explain why someone in the room won’t get a premium package, but that person must buy a refreshment package.

Anyone with a deluxe package is strictly prohibited from sharing or giving away drinks with someone who doesn’t have a deluxe package (if you are caught, you may lose your package with no refund).

But is the Royal Caribbean drink package worth it?

Although the price may seem high, it is actually easier to drink than the deluxe package, beer may be $7, mixed drink $13, glass of wine $10, specialty coffee $6, freshly squeezed juice $10, and soda maybe $4 Dollar. You don’t have to be an alcoholic, the numbers pile up quickly.

Let’s see an example:

Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice at Windjammer Cafeteria $109 AM Cappuccino at Cafe Promenade $612 PM Soda Water and Lunch $41:30 PM Bottled Water at Pool $33 PM Poolside Lime & Coconut $7 at 4 PM Bottled water at the restaurant Pool $35 pm Mixed drinks at the Bionic Bar $137 pm Wine and dinner at the main restaurant $109 pm Mixed drinks at the theatre Bottled water in the morning $312 Mixed drinks at Schooner Bar $13

It’s not a boozy day, buy a la carte and you’ll pay $101 for a drink. Now, if you just want a drink or two, don’t drink soda, like regular coffee, and prefer flavored water to real juice, then drink packages are a waste of money. However, anyone who is likely to drink 3-5 alcoholic beverages (or more) a day may also have a nice cup of coffee, a juice, a few bottles of water, or even a milkshake, even if the daily price is higher, buy A drink pack is usually worth it.

Of course, there’s also the idea that you don’t have to do math while you’re giving up the drink you want because you’re spending too much money. Luxury beverage packages allow you to focus on your vacation, and while drinking responsibly is important (you don’t want to end up stuck on a boat), you don’t need to be an alcoholic to get your money’s worth.
