Tuesday’s action involving Blue Dogs will be all about an intraparty fight between moderates and progressives, focusing on Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Tex.) and Rep. Caroline Burdeau (D-Ga. ) race.
Cuellar is facing a runoff against progressive Jessica Cisneros, who won liberal heavyweights Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I- Vt.) support. ). It’s a rematch of the 2020 campaign, but Cuellar’s road to victory appeared to be more difficult after Politico issued a draft opinion showing the Supreme Court was poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. Cuellar was the last Democrat in the House to oppose abortion.
Burdeau is locked in a primary race against incumbent Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Ga.) due to redistricting. Progressives backed McBath against Burdeau, one of the last holdouts as House Democrats worked to pass President Biden’s “build back better” agenda, thanks to Manchin and another centrist Senator Keir Sten Sinema (D-Arizona).
