Russian strike on residential building kills 15 in eastern Ukraine, officials say

Residential buildings in the town of Chasiv Yar were attacked on Saturday night as Russia stepped up its attack on eastern Ukrainian towns again in an attempt to gain control of the entire Donbas region.

The National Emergency Service said 15 bodies had been found in the rubble and search and rescue efforts were continuing.

As of 1 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET), emergency crews had rescued five people and established contact with three others still buried under the rubble, the service said in a statement.

Emergency services added that 24 people, including a child, “may still be in the rubble”.

The head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, told Ukrainian television that the region was hit by two to three Russian rockets, an incident that “reconfirms the crimes of the Russian Federation, It was confirmed that they were shelling residential areas.”

Tashivyar and other towns in Donetsk have come under heavy artillery fire in recent days as Russian troops try to quell Ukrainian resistance in the area and push further west towards Kramatorsk and Slovyansk.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed Saturday that its forces destroyed a hangar near Chasiv Yar with U.S.-supplied M777 howitzers, long-range weapons and dozens of Ukrainian “militants”.

CNN was unable to independently verify Russia’s claims. Ukrainian officials said the strike hit a train station in Chasiv Yar, and several people were injured in the attack.

Donetsk and Luhansk are two regions that together make up the Donbass, eastern Ukraine, where the conflict between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists began in 2014. The region has become a key centerpiece of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military ambitions in Ukraine. The army failed to take over Kyiv earlier this year.

Russian troops have occupied almost all of the Luhansk region, Sheryl Heyday, head of the Luhansk region’s military administration, said in a telegram on Saturday, adding that about 300,000 people in the region were forced to flee their homes .

Ukrainian troops withdraw from Lysychansk, their last resistance in key areas
Lysychansk, the last city in Luhansk still under Ukrainian control, fell to Russia last week.

Since then, Russian troops have concentrated in the Donetsk region, shelling vast areas of the front and advancing from the Luhansk region to the Donetsk region, Hayday said.

For more than a month, Ukrainians have been defending the region from a Russian attack.

“We are trying to contain the Russian armed formations along the entire front,” Hayday said, adding that “the occupying forces have had slight success and continue their offensive west of Lysichansk.”

Attack on Russian supply lines

Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to attack Russian supply lines and ammunition storage points in occupied areas behind the front.

Ukrainians say a long-range strike hit Russian troops in the occupied Kherson region of southern Ukraine.

Kherson Regional Council member Shershi Crane said on Sunday that “the occupier’s military units were hit with precision” in the city of Kherson. Images and video located to Kherson showed a thick plume of grey smoke rising into the air on Sunday morning.

Khlan told Ukrainian television that Russian aid defenses were unable to intercept Ukrainian fire “thanks to the modern Western weapons that the Ukrainian army is using”.

Sunday’s attack follows a series of bombings near Kherson on Saturday. Ukrainian troops attacked a Russian military stockpile at the Chornobaivka airport in the north of the city, Ukrainian officials said.

U.S. to provide Ukraine with 4 more mobile rocket systems in new $400 million Ukraine security aid package

The Nikolaev and Kherson regions have also become hotspots of conflict, with Ukrainian troops intensifying fire on Russian storage and supply lines in the occupied southern territories, while Russia has used artillery fire to try to stop Ukraine’s advance.

Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti said earlier Saturday that Kherson’s air defenses had been activated.

Citing the pro-Russian militias, RIA Novosti said there was shelling from the direction of Mykolaiv. “Air defense systems are working over Kherson,” the government said on its Telegram channel.

In recent days, the United States has announced new weapons and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

The Biden administration will provide Ukraine with four more high-mobility rocket systems in its latest security assistance package, a senior defense official said Saturday. The State Department also announced an additional humanitarian aid package totaling nearly $368 million to Ukraine.

CNN’s Manveena Suri, Yulia Kesaieva and Josh Pennington contributed reporting.
