ISMERIA, Egypt (Reuters) – Egypt’s Suez Canal recorded its highest monthly revenue so far in April with $629 million in vessel transit fees, authorities that manage the waterway said on Sunday, as traffic rebounded from the impact of the pandemic .
Monthly earnings in April were 13.6 percent higher than a year earlier, Osama Rabi, the chairman of the Canal Authority, said in a statement.
The total number of ships passing through the 193-kilometer (120-mile) waterway linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean increased by 6.3 percent from a year ago to 1,929.
He said they carried a combined cargo weight of 114.5 million tonnes, the highest monthly net cumulative payload through the waterway.
He added that the number of tankers, liquefied tankers and container carriers in April increased by 25.8%, 12% and 9% respectively from a year earlier.
In addition to the impact of the pandemic, traffic has also been disrupted after a container ship ran aground in the canal in late March last year.
