A teenage gunman “barred” himself in a classroom at an elementary school in Texas on May 24, before killing at least 19 children and two teachers, according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials. .

All the victims were in the same fourth-grade classroom at Uvald Rob Elementary School, about 80 miles west of San Antonio.

The gunman, identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was reportedly shot dead by a police officer who was called to the scene. Two of the victims were school teachers Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia.

Investigators are still working to determine the sequence of events during the massacre, with local law enforcement reportedly attempting to engage the gunman. It took about 30 minutes before police “eliminated” the gunman, an emergency worker told CNN.

Ten children killed in the attack have been named, including eight-year-olds Uziyah Garcia and Alexandria Aniyah Rubio, Amerie Jo Garza, Makenna Lee Elrod, Xavier Javier Lopez, Jose Flores, Navaeh Brown, Annabell Guadalupe Rodriguez, Alithia Ramirez and Ellie Lugo, both 10 years old.

After the attack, President Joe Biden urged Congress to end the “carnage” of gun violence in America, saying: “In God’s name, when will we stand up to the gun lobby?”
