Toomey defends delay of veterans health bill, says he will back it if amendment passes

Toomey defended his actions on Sunday, saying he was working to amend the bill to “won’t change any spending on any veterans program,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”

“What I want to do is change an approach to government accounting that’s designed to keep our Democratic colleagues on a $400 billion spree of unrelated spending that isn’t related to veterans and doesn’t appear in the veterans field,” he said. .

“Honest people will admit that my changes will not affect the amount of money or what veterans’ money is spent on,” he said. “All I want to do is use it for government accounting purposes, like we’ve always used it for government accounting purposes.”

He added that if his amendment passed, he would vote for the bill.

On the same CNN show, Veterans Affairs Secretary Dennis MacDonald said Toomey’s delay in action was insignificant and unnecessary.

“In terms of what happened, in terms of the amendments and everything else…I would say these people have waited long enough. Let’s get it done,” he said. “I think they should go ahead and vote.”

The accounting reforms that Toomey is seeking could hurt veteran care, McDonough said. “I can’t do it in good conscience because the result of this will be a ration of veterinary care, which I can’t sign up for,” he said.

Incineration pits have been used by the U.S. military to dispose of waste at military sites outside the United States. Fumes from these disposal sites have been thought to cause long-term respiratory illness in exposed soldiers.

On ABC’s “This Week,” Stewart was cynical about the GOP’s response, calling it a pure power move.

“We went through this with the first responders of 9/11,” he said.

“What Toomey’s amendment wants to do is make sure that our sick and dying veterans can come back to Washington with their hats on, cancer, and get through the mountains like our 9/11 first responders in ground zero. The hall is begging every year.”
