Toy stores will range from as small as 1,000 square feet to 10,000 square feet at Macy’s flagship stores in Atlanta, Chicago, Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco. Toys R Us’ footprint could expand during the holiday season.
The stores will be open from late July to October 15. Macy’s plans to offer some customer-friendly perks, including a new toy demo table and a life-size photo of Jeffrey’s giraffe.
The once-legendary toy store went bankrupt in 2018 and closed all its stores. It has made several unsuccessful attempts to make a comeback with different bosses.
WHP Global bought the toy retailer from Tru Kids Inc., which took over the failed brand in a liquidation sale. Tru Kids had opened stores in New Jersey and Texas, but it closed them in early 2021 due to the pandemic.
The company said in its first-quarter earnings report that its toy sales were 15 times higher than in the comparable period before the partnership.
Prior to the transaction, Macy’s sold toys in its main stores, “shop-in-shop” backstage locations and independent stores Market by Macy’s and Backstage.
